Wood Element
"Spring brings the energy to transform plans into action."
Wood Element
The Wood Element of spring is a season of growth and a time for expansion; to put into action the plans that you've made during the wisdom of winter. The beginning of outward moving energy. Its strengths are growth and determination.
An imbalance in the Wood Element leaves us feeling frustrated, rigid, and angry; it can stunt our emotional and spiritual growth, leading to resentment and an inability to make progress in life. Regularly feeling irritable, nervous, stubborn, aggressive, confrontational, arrogant, or inflexible in thoughts or actions can all be signs of an imbalance in the Wood Element.
The Wood Element is known for its expansive energy and determination. Like a seed bursting through the soil, it rises, curves, and finds its way through rocks and around obstacles to seek the light. Its energy is flexible, yielding, strong, and durable.
As plants come vibrantly to life in the spring, they resonate with the energy of new beginnings, and the characteristics of courage, resourcefulness, ambition, competition, and the rewards of a good challenge.
Spring is a time for hope and optimism. Like the rings of a tree, Wood grows outward, manifesting new shapes, and forming structure. Like the house being framed after the blueprints have been created during the wisdom of winter. A time to put plans into action.

Its strong leadership role takes charge. Being direct and assertive with a lot of drive requires a balance of kindness and a humble willingness to understand others. Otherwise, the branches of a tree become brittle and break. Like a fresh seedling, well-balanced Wood energy is strong and determined, yet soft and flexible. It's open to change and willing to learn and grow with new ideas, behaviors, and actions.

Wood Energy In Action
Wood energy expands and rises toward heaven in gratitude.
If possible, spend time walking in the woods during spring. Notice the trees' enormous trunks and the strength and determination it takes for them to rise far above your head. Yet as the winds blow, the trees sway, bend, and seem to dance beautifully in the turbulence that tosses them from side to side.
Use these moments in the forest to set your intention toward practicing patience, learning to be flexible, and to be sensitive toward others.

A balanced Wood Element can more easily and genuinely sustain a hopeful and positive outlook on life. They're strong, yet flexible. When obstacles block their path, they find another way. They're thoughtful of others and grateful, kind, and compassionate.
A beautiful way to seek and record your upward growth is to create a Gratitude Journal. Any notebook will work. And while it's possible to make this list in an electronic form, I find it best to write it on the Wood Element of paper. There is energy in this process, and feeling the pages as you record and re-read them is another level of energy that helps this process.
To begin, write "I'm Grateful For..." at the top of the first page of your notebook. Number each new idea and add to your list as often as you'd like. Making this a daily habit can help maintain your gratitude, strength, and flexibility throughout the year.
